Payday 3 might be powered by Unreal Engine 5 on PS5, Xbox Series X.
After years of work, the team shifted production to the more familiar Unreal Engine, but faced more setbacks with failed game launches and legal trouble for the company's higher-ups. In fact, Payday 3 is Starbreeze's last hope: if no contract is secured, the company may be forced to sell the IP. First announced in 2016, Payday 3 was initially set to run on the Valhalla engine, a full engine that Starbreeze bought for millions of dollars. This long development time has seen the project shift as Starbreeze doubles-down on gaming and the Payday franchise, which remains the singular IP and sole focus for the company's business (all other segments have been sold off to help reduce debts). Payday 3 was announced in 2017, but the game is still in its design phases thanks to Starbreeze's financial troubles. Starbreeze already confirmed the game is targeting PS5 and Xbox Series X with a 2022-23 release date. Developer Starbreeze has announced the crime game is being built in the Unreal Engine, and the design phase is still happening. The estimated release date for PAYDAY 3 is still 2022 or 2023, just like last years internal prediction. Payday 3 is currently set to release in 2023.
